President Calderón During the Ceremony to Launch the Nurseries and Day-Care Program to Support Working Mothers in Veracruz
Thursday, January 11, 2007 | Speech
Accompanied by Fidel Herrera Beltrán, Constitutional Governor and other authorities from the state of Veracruz, President Calderón began the inaugural ceremony with these words, “As I did a moment ago in Chalco, in the state of Mexico, I came here precisely to these neighborhoods, to Dos Caminos and the working-class neighborhoods of Veracruz, as well as to La Reserva to fulfill the pledge I made, by inaugurating this Day Care Center Program for a New Generation.”
In Chalco, in the state of Mexico, the president declared: "Nowadays, an increasing number of homes are supported by women who, as the governor said, act as both mother and father. Today, over five million households, several of which are obviously in Veracruz, are exclusively supported by women."
The president discussed the Day Care Centers for a New Generation Program and the benefits this would entail both for working women and for those that wish to run them. He explained that during the first stage, these day care centers would help nearly 60,000 children throughout the country. In order for the program to be repeated elsewhere, he asked Secretary of Social Development María Beatriz Zavala Peniche and Director General of the System of Integral Development for the Family, María Cecilia Landerreche Gómez Marín to implement personnel training and assessment programs to ensure that the centers are run by competent people.
Finally, not wishing to avoid the topic of price increases in basic foodstuffs, the president added, “I have already given instructions to the Cabinet to implement all the measures required to prevent this from happening and obviously, as president, I am going to maintain a very firm, responsible policy to prevent a repetition of the errors of the past that permitted price hikes that led to bankruptcy and devaluations that continue to affect the people of Mexico.”
