President Calderón during First National Week of Affiliation to Medical Insurance for a New Generation

Monday, August 13, 2007 | Speech

President Calderón expressed his pleasure at being in Hidalgo to inaugurate the First National Week of Affiliation to the Medical Insurance Scheme for a New Generation, adding that, “Government is committed to reinforcing Popular Insurance in order to advance rapidly towards universal health coverage." The president then explained that the Popular Insurance Scheme operates by providing state governments with funds for every person enrolled in the system, while the Medical Insurance for a New Generation scheme protects newborns from most medical eventualities and entitles them to all the hospital and clinical services, consultations and medicines they may need. A total of 320,000 infants have been enrolled in the scheme so far, including 8,000 in Hidalgo.

The president congratulated the Health Secretariat and the Popular Insurance personnel for their cooperation, adding that the Medical Insurance for a new Generation scheme will also enable Mexico to comply with its commitments regarding social and human development, since it has pledged to achieve the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals of reducing the number of children that die before the age of five by two thirds. The president ended by saying that health is a vital force that drives societies and that in the democratic Mexico of the 21st century, leading a healthy life should not be a luxury but rather a solid social base guaranteed to all Mexicans.
