President Calderón at Ceremony of “Rebirth of a Great Destination."

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 | Speech

Santa María Huatulco, Oaxaca

I would like to say hello to all those here at this ceremony for the Rebirth of Huatulco, who include investors, social and business leaders of this locality, of this beautiful locality, with its nine bays, sites with historical monuments, enviable coasts and balmy climate. I know that Huatulco has everything required to attract national and international tourism.

So the first aim of this Renaissance of Huatulco is to expand the range of choices for tourists. And I am delighted that through the commitment of public and private sectors we are working for this destination, and what I have instructed the Secretary of Tourism is to ensure that by the end of this Government, in 2012, there are at least 2,500 new rooms here in Huatulco. And I am glad to hear that there are commitments to build over a thousand rooms, construction of which will begin this year, which I am very pleased about. That brings us to the goal of this entire administration and I think that if we do things properly, which we in Federal Government will do, we will be able to achieve much more.

It is a road link that will enable tourists to reach Huatulco in less than three hours and will also permit the development of a tourist corridor between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, Mazunte and other beaches and localities that will enable a tourist development to be built here in a clean, orderly fashion, rather like the Riviera Maya.

As I have said before: I am convinced that the most effective way of emerging from poverty, is work, and employment and that people are not seeking favors or begging for charity. What people want is an opportunity to work, to progress and to help their families progress.

I would urge you all to bet on and commit yourselves to this great project and encourage you all to continue working together, united in the construction of a different, competitive Mexico, a better Mexico and a winning Mexico that we want for our children, a Mexico that will last us forever.
